Scale it back

My sister recently moved into a new house and is decorating her living room. She has always had a good eye for color, fashion, and style. Today she told me that designing a space is harder than she thought it was going to be. I find that to often be the case. As a designer, the firm I work at often gets a project half way through because the client thought they could do it on their own.

One of the biggest struggles people have is scale. Its not easy to make sure that all of your furniture is the correct scale for the room and other existing pieces. You can't have an small apartment size sofa with large 42" deep chairs, it just doesn't look balanced.

Image: Domain Home This larger space had room for a few extra stools, which is always fun! The sofa looks dwarfed by the size of the chairs and chunky stools.

If you are designing a room get out your tape measure and draw it out on graph paper before you buy anything. Furniture can be an expensive mistake! Luckily I have computer programs to help me out map it out.

My sister was trying to figure out what size her cocktail table should be so I drew it out. It ended up working out to be about 48" x 36". Now she can go looking for something that size. Here are a few of my favorite options.

TIP OF THE DAY: Your cocktail table should be about 18" from your sofa/chairs.

...pass it on!

Color of the year

Every year I change the color on my resume and logo to the Pantone Color of the Year. What better way to keep you website current than updating the color? There have been some fun colors the last few years. AND I still love my logo!

I Graduated

I got my diploma today and thought it was finally time to post about my graduation. Enjoy the pictures!

My grandpa read this poem at my graduation party and I thought I would share it. It is a beautiful poem full of wisdom ( just like my grandpa)

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion;respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." -- Tecumseh

Tree Hugging

I am currently studying for the LEED Green Associate exam (I am taking it on March 14, ahhhh!) and I am also in a sustainability class (basically I am becoming a tree hugger) so today in class we went on a tour of the on-campus recycling facilities!

Top: corrugated cardboard vs. grey board; tin bundles     Bottom: cardboard bundles ; plastic #1 bundles ...remind you of Wall E?

...remind you of Wall E?

Our tour guide, Logan, said that the number one thing you should NOT recycle that people in Rexburg commonly recycle... DIAPERS! ewwwwwww!

Here is a list of some other things that should not be recycled:

  • used paper plates
  • tissues, napkins, and paper towels
  • plastic bags
  • bottle caps
  • packaging Made of Foiled, Glossy, Glazed, Waxed, Glassine, and Lacquer Coating (i.e. candy bars wrappers, chip bags, juice boxes, etc.
  • hazardous household waste (i.e. batteries, lightbulbs, paint cans, etc.)

Moral of the story... RECYCLE! (but not the wrong items)

Interior Design Love

For Valentines Day I want to share my love of interior design with you. Lately I have been working on a comprehensive project (apparently my teachers want proof that I actually learned something in the last 4 years). Below is part of what I have come up with for the master bedroom of a house in southern California. I am really starting to like what is happening...

I know what you are thinking... "How can I hire her to design my house?" Just click the "contact" tab on the left and shoot me a message!

all business

Check out the business card I made for my pops. What do you think? too "designer" for an engineer?

Update: Below is the final design we decided to go with! My dad has good taste

snow-nation

My last post was saying how I never want to leave California, literally a week before I left. Well, update:  I have embraced the wonderful Idaho snow, literally my last semester! On Saturday I went out on what they call "Outdoor Discovery" and boy do I wish I would have discovered it sooner! All these years (and I really mean a lot of years) in Idaho, I had no idea such a wonderful organization existed. I got to go up to Badger Creek and do all of these wonderful activities

Remember when I gave up sugar for a month...?

I hope you remember the promise from my last post... that I would "keep you posted" and "give you good recipes along the way" ...who was i kidding? I don't cook!? so there are no recipes, but here is the post to "keep you posted"

I went a whole month without sugar :-) HA! to all you who didn't believe in me! It was glorious :-) I had so much energy and was on cloud 9 all the time.

but then I failed (in fact i'm eating ice cream right now) my first mistake... I went out to lunch with the girls at work and it was my boss's birthday and they had mini cupcakes... what's one little cupcake right? well it was all downhill from there, including chicken and waffles, diddy reise, cadbury ice cream, etc. and i enjoyed every second of it!

but there is good news... I am doing a lot better and don't eat sweets 'ery day! and I am striving to take care of my body like I should. I think 24 years of abuse is enough :-)

Sugar Free is the way to be

This post is to inform you ('cause I know how much you care) that I am going a month without sugar. (this must be the "summer without" because last month I did a week without TV)

http://theridgeathleticclub.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/sugar-free.jpg
I'm going to be just like this lollipop
First I think you need some background: I LOVE SUGAR!!!!!! If anyone knows me, they know that I LOVE sugar! Whenever someone asks me my favorite food I just say "sugar, anything with sugar in it"  people would always say, sugar is bad for everyone and my response would be "actually, my body runs better on sugar" (i guess this month will prove or disprove that theory), i even blog about my sugar addiction HERE & HERE

so, why am I taking on such a huge feat? it may be the 10 lbs I've gained in the last 6 months, it may be that I'm growing up (now that i'm a quarter of a century old), but the last straw was that the dentist told me I have 3 cavities... AGAIN! I have never had cavities in my life, until the last 2 times I've been to the dentist (I'm starting to think maybe my dentist is cavity-fill-happy) but either way he said I need to stop drinking pop (even diet) and I thought, "Why stop there? I should stop eating sugar all together!"

Who would've thought that the dentist, of all people, would be the last straw to trigger such a huge change in my life!?

so here I am... getting sugar free! I'll keep you posted on how it goes, and good recipes along the way :-)

Surprise!!!!

I decided my mom needed a surprise birthday party this year. So this is what i threw together in the little time I had. My dad was the photographer so, as a man, he obviously didn't care to get any pictures of the decorations :-( oh well!

I learned a lot from throwing this party:

Don't tell the guest of honor and the guests to be at the party at the same time

Try not to involve your grandma too much, it will stress her out almost giving her a heart attack and you will owe her a spa day afterwards

Think of a plan AHEAD of time to keep the guest of honor out of the house while you are setting up (calling the guest of honor on their way home saying"we weren't done putting together her present" is a DEAD GIVE AWAY!)

Oh well it was still a blast and she gave us a great reaction to the surprise (she should be an actor) I have the cutest mother ever! Happy Birthday Mom!

Cray-Cray

This summer is going to be "cray-cray" (in the words of my adorable little sister... see her blog here). I have an internship here in cali WOOT WOOT! and then in July i'm moving to Jackson Hole, Wyoming WOOT WOOT!! I'm super stoked :-)

Well today I started my first day at Aplus interior design :-) and guess what!?! NOTHING WENT WRONG!!! what a fabulous day! I was on time (even early) and dressed correctly, and didn't say anything too stupid (that I know of) ...hey, there's a first for everything! I'm super excited

guess what else... I survived LA rush hour traffic!!!!

AND my first California earthquake WAHOOOO! what a feat :-)

some may be worried that I'm becoming a true Californian... but don't worry, i'll always be a true Michigander

15 again

Last night as I was watching Teen Mom (which I'm proud to be addicted to) and painting my nails, I felt like I was 15 again :-) those were the good ol' days

So, lets start with a story! At Christmas time while I was home, I was jumping around the pool waterfalls (like a normal girl my age) and I slipped and fell into the pool, like a cool kid! Well, I slammed my right pinkie and it's purple (yes still... 3 months later) well, now have to paint my nails to hide the hideous purple pinkie. Normally I am anti painting my nails because it chips and looks horrible but now I am forced to stay on top of it!

needless to say, i got sucked in to the nail polish addiction! these are the colors that I've recently bought.

copy cat

I saw a version of this all over Pinterest and Etsy and of course thought "I could make that!" so while in class I decided to make it. It literally took me 15 min :-) Michigan LOVE!

Wassily Chair

The Wassily Chair is a classic, but look at it with cowhide! Simply gorgeous! This is on my "a girl can dream..." list :-)

My new favorite meal

Tom Kha Gai is my new favorite meal, thanks to my new friends! doesn't it look yummy? and it's healthy! It's a Thai soup with coconut milk, ginger and other delicious items on rice. Now I just have to learn how to make it :-)

Mies van der Rohe love

Thanks to my Contemporary Architecture and Furniture furniture class I get to see and learn about tons of cool stuff! Today we learned about Mies van der Rohe. This onyx wall is from the Barcelona Pavilion. Gorgeous!!!!!
